miss leila is growing each day and with that growth comes challenges. yippeee! so i have some questions and topics of discussion for you mamas.
1. sooo teething sucks.
i've been giving leila tylenol to ease the pain of teething at night, and the pedi has recommended alternating that with motrin. orajel wasn't very effective for her. does anyone use the dissolving tablets? i've heard mixed reviews on their safety due to the presence of belladonna. she has some teething toys during the day, but i'm talking about making her more comfortable at night. other suggestions?
2. i'd like to minimize baby concussions.
yesterday we had two head hitting incidents. first, leila was banging on her xylophone and plummeted face first into the toy. then she was sitting up on her blanket in the kitchen and while transitioning to crawling, she lost her balance and fell sideways onto the tile. we usually play in the carpeted loft, but i was making dinner at the time so there wasn't much to be done. i tried to imagine her crawling with a bears helmet on, but perhaps we shouldn't take that route. while making dinner tonight, i positioned a couple of sofa cushions around her, but of course she crawled off and sat elsewhere away from the cushions, lol. should i just steer clear of kitchen playtime until she's mastered her balance? and uh, do they ever really master it?
3. if dex thinks my undies are a toy, you can imagine his love of leila's things.
it turns out rattling and squeaking are beloved by dogs and babies alike. and our dogs don't know the difference between their toys and leila's. i truly think they believe they are being bestowed new toys on a daily basis when they discover one of leila's they hadn't experienced before. thoughts on how to help the pups distinguish between the two? or is this a lost cause?
4. let's talk about snot.
leila has had a nonstop cough and runny nose for about a month. she's been to the pedi and there's no ear infection or anything like that. the cough appears to be from the drainage going into her throat, and our best guess is that the runny nose is part of teething. i'm a full-time engineer and part time snot wiper. it's kind of grossing me out. any suggestions on how to minimize the facial gunk? how long did this phase go on for y'all?

try an amber teething necklace! have have several friends, neighbors, and patients who swear by them...
also, there is an all-natural solution that comes in what looks like a single eye dropper thingy - its made from chamomile i think and is soothing and works great!
kids will fall; i wouldn't worry too much, but maybe toss a blanket down on the tile...
i have no idea about dog toys bc i'm sure our dog would think that she, too, was getting fantastical new toys daily if we had baby toys lying around... that is a tough one!
here is a link for the necklace...
she wears it all the time, under clothes so it touches her skin - it has natural analgesic properties and decreases the discomfort from teething...

One idea on the runny nose. Try turning off the ceiling fan at night for a while. Instead, for white noise use a air purifier. Hugs. Cuz Michelle :)
We use Humphrey's teething tablets. Hyland's were the ones that were recalled. Honestly, I think Tylenol is probably best for discomfort. Have you tried frozen fruit in a mesh feeder before bed to help soothe her gums?
We have scolded our dogs enough that they have learned to distinguish their toys from hers. And we keep her away from theirs, for fairness' sake.
Kids will hit their heads. V has bloodied her lip a couple of times learning how to balance while walking/running. It is scary but they survive. I thought about the helmet, too, but all kids go through this.
Docs will tell you there is no correlation between teething and a runny nose. I call BS because V gets one every time she is teething. It could be allergies, I guess (maybe something to discuss with pedi), but if you think it's teething, it probably is. Invest in some Boogie Wipes! And hang in there - you are a great mom. :)
Here are some teething resources that don't involve placebo necklaces:

Also, it's not necessary to spend money on homeopathic/"herbal"/"all natural" tablets or drops to help with teething pain. Sugar water has the same effect in getting babies to stop crying for a short time:
Cry-babies demonstrate 'sweet' dispositions - small amounts of sugar water effective at stopping crying
What's the harm in buying the homeopath stuff if it "works" just as well as sugar water or juice? 1) Their products aren't generally tested or regulated by the FDA, so you end up with companies like Hyland's recalling their tablets because they contain Atropa belladonna (look it up), and although this poison was only present in homeopathic quantities, people started reporting adverse effects. The FDA investigated, determined that the manufacturing process control was substandard, and the product was voluntarily recalled. 2) You could be spending/saving that time and money for something that could actually help your child. 3) It's probably a bad idea to support an industry that thrives on providing fraudulent cures and false hope to people with *actual diseases*.

Came back and read this again. I may have been a bit... overzealous.
*henry is 18 months old and still falls down all the time. to top it off he seems incapable of catching himself with anything but his face. So um yeah....he always looks a bit banged up. The doc told us they have hard heads for a reason! Kids are clumsy and thats about all there is to it.
*henry was/is a snotty mess anytime he gets new teeth. it's sucks, but one day it will just stop. hang in there!...and keep a tissue in your pocket!
We used the teething tablets and they were AMAZING. They are the only things that helped E when teething.
E still falls a lot. And the crashes just get harder and harder the older they get :(
We have to put every single toy up every single night or the dogs eat it. I left a teacup out the other night and it was destroyed when I got up. So pissed.
And.. E's nose runs constantly due to allergies. And then she coughs. The Boogy wipes help dry it up some.
